Barcode types are divided into 13 groups.

UPCA

UPC
(Universal Product Code) barcodes are used within North America to identify retail goods. UPC-A encodes GTIN-12 numbers. UPC-E can encode a shortened version of some GTIN-12 numbers. GTIN numbers are administered by GS1.

EAN barcodes are used to identify retail products outside of North America. EAN-13 encodes GTIN-13 numbers.

GS1-Databar barcodes are used to label small items, coupons and fresh food. They can encode item number, batch number, weight or expiry date. There are 7 types of Databar. Some are used at point-of-sale, others are not.

ITF

ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5) barcodes are often GTIN-14 case codes used for identifying bulk cartons and shipping containers.

C39

Code 39 is an alphanumeric barcode type used in a number of non-retail systems.

Code 128 has many uses in “supplementary coding” as defined by global GS1 standards.
